South Coast Rail Passenger Service Launches for the First Time in 65 Years (featured )

For the first time in over six decades, passenger rail service has returned to several South Coast communities, as the South Coast Rail officially began operations on Monday, March 24, 2025.

This long-awaited service brings rail connections to Taunton, Freetown, New Bedford, Middleboro, and Fall River, providing residents with a direct and convenient transit option to Boston and beyond.  

Governor Maura Healey celebrated the milestone, emphasizing the significance of the project.“The people of Taunton, Freetown, New Bedford, Middleboro, and Fall River have been waiting for passenger rail service for far too long,” Healey said. “General Manager Eng and his team aren’t kicking the can down the road – they’re delivering. We’re thrilled to soon be launching South Coast Rail service, which will make it easier for South Coast residents to get around the state, reduce congestion, and spur economic development.”  

Train Schedule & Service Details

The new South Coast Rail service will provide 32 total weekday trips between South Station and East Taunton, with a weekend schedule of 26 trips.

- Fall River Line: 15 daily trips  

- New Bedford Line: 17 daily trips  

- Weekday Frequency: Every 70 minutes

- Weekend Frequency: Every 2 hours

- Late Night Service: The final train from Boston will depart just before midnight.  

Additionally, shuttle services will operate between each terminus point and East Taunton Station, allowing for even greater connectivity and aligning with the All Day Service model used throughout the MBTA’s commuter rail system.  

Fare Structure

The MBTA has set South Coast Rail fares in Zone 8, meaning:  

- Full fare: $12.25 per ride  

- Reduced fare:$6.00 per ride  

The launch of South Coast Rail marks a major expansion in Massachusetts’ transit infrastructure, offering a long-overdue rail connection for South Coast residents. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion,enhance regional mobility, and stimulate economic growth in the communities it serves.
