Boston’s restaurant scene is about to receive one of the culinary world’s highest honors: recognition from the MICHELIN Guide. On Tuesday, the globally respected organization announced that Boston will be included in its newly created MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities edition, joining fellow culinary powerhouses New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
The move marks a significant milestone for Boston, where chefs, restaurateurs, and hospitality professionals have long championed a diverse and evolving food culture rooted in both local ingredients and global influences.
“The Boston restaurant scene has reached new heights, a fact validated by The MICHELIN Guide's entrance into our market,” said Martha J. Sheridan, President and CEO of Meet Boston. “Long known for distinguished and unparalleled farm-to-table and sea-to-table cuisine, Boston now boasts an expanded portfolio of epicurean excellence, underpinned by our great diversity of offerings and contributions from a global diaspora of culinary creators.”
The MICHELIN Guide’s anonymous Inspectors have already begun their work, quietly making dining reservations and evaluating Boston restaurants on a rigorous set of global standards. The official restaurant selections and star awards will be announced during the MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities Ceremony, scheduled for later in 2025.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of The MICHELIN Guide, noted the city’s rich food heritage and the quality of its culinary community. “We are thrilled for Boston to join The MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities as a premier destination for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history,” Poullennec said. “The local passion, talent, and camaraderie in Boston are evident in its restaurant community.”
This is the first time Boston will be formally recognized by the prestigious MICHELIN Guide, which has historically overlooked the city despite its growing national and international acclaim. The announcement puts Boston squarely on the global gastronomic map and opens the door for its chefs and restaurants to earn coveted MICHELIN Stars, Bib Gourmands, and other distinctions.
The MICHELIN Guide's decision to include Boston is independent and based entirely on its internal selection process. However, it is working with local tourism organizations like Meet Boston for promotional support and awareness.
For food lovers, tourists, and locals alike, Boston’s MICHELIN moment is finally here—and it promises to elevate the city’s culinary reputation to a whole new level.
