Harvard University has secured the top spot as the most selective college in the nation, according to a new analysis by The Business Journals. Using data from the U.S. Department of Education, the study ranked schools based on a weighted formula factoring in both acceptance rates and matriculation rates, providing a comprehensive look at just how competitive college admissions have become.
To be considered, institutions needed to receive at least 3,000 applications for fall 2023. Harvard stood out with a staggering 3.5% acceptance rate — the lowest in the country. Of the 56,937 applicants who sought admission to the Ivy League institution, only 1,965 were accepted.
The report comes amid a decade-long surge in college applications nationwide. Applications to accredited colleges and universities have climbed 83% over the past ten years, fueled in large part by the Common Application, which allows students to apply to multiple institutions with a single submission. As a result, already competitive schools like Harvard have become even more selective.
The findings underscore the increasingly intense competition for spots at the nation’s top-tier universities and the growing demand for access to elite higher education. Harvard’s continued dominance in both prestige and selectivity reflects its longstanding reputation for academic excellence and global influence.
